This is a playful way to work on both fine and gross motor skills. Using a ladle or soup spoon from your kitchen, your child can scoop a ball and transport it. You can set up baskets at different distances, making it a great exercise activity too!
For a fun variation, colour-label each basket and turn it into a bonus colour recognition and sorting exercise.
This game is versatile—you can use ball pit balls, coloured stickers, or even coloured play silks to make matches. For an added sensory element, consider playing with water and trays instead of baskets. This activity helps improve coordination, encourages focus, and gets some energy out in a playful way.
Gather a ladle or soup spoon, baskets, and a variety of balls.
Set up several baskets or trays, optionally each designated for a specific colour.
Place all the balls in a single basket to start.
Have your child use the ladle or soup spoon to scoop a ball from the starting basket.
Encourage them to walk carefully and place the ball in the basket that matches its colour. Adjust the distances for more or less challenge.
Continue until all the balls have been sorted into their designated baskets.
Water Play: Add water to the baskets and use trays instead, turning the game into a water-scooping sensory experience.
Timed Challenge: Use a timer and see how quickly they can sort all the balls, adding an element of friendly competition and excitement.
Obstacle Course: Create a mini obstacle course to reach each colour basket, adding more gross motor movement and challenge to the activity.
