This activity is perfect for sparking imaginative play while developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. It’s an engaging way to introduce basic concepts of construction and engineering in a fun, hands-on manner.
Picture a mini construction site right in your play area. Little ones can dig, scoop, build and imagine away!
Get ready for some storytelling too, as they narrate the adventures of their construction crew.
To set this up, you’ll need a shallow tray filled with play sand. Add in some small construction vehicles, pebbles, and even miniature construction cones or figures. Encourage your child to create hills, roads, and buildings. The possibilities are endless!
For an extra touch, you can also include a few small containers of water to simulate ponds or muddy construction areas for extra sensory fun.
Place down any optional mess-catching bases. We like to use a potting mat, but you might have a shower curtain, newspapers, or equivalent.
Pour sand into the tray, add vehicles and let them take over the rest!
Roll vehicles, balls and other objects down the ramp, experiment and play!
Dig in the sand with excavators, make wheel tracks, build structures and demolish them with the trucks. Your little one will find many ways to play with this setup.
Add small figurines and anything else your little one might find interesting right now. Scoops, cups and funnels are always a great addition to sand play.
