A playful ritual to try when someone needs a dash of encouragement or motivation

Motivation sprinkles

Sometimes what we all need - grownups and kids alike - is a little sprinkle of encouragement. This playful idea is a simple, heartwarming ritual that can bring joy and connection to moments when someone needs a boost.

It started in our home as a family game - pretending to throw invisible sprinkles over someone who needed a bit of extra energy, courage, or calm.

On top of giving them support, we'd chant "Motivation sprinkles!”, showering them in imaginary sparkles until smiles appeared all around. Now it’s become one of our go-to languages of care.

It works beautifully in both directions. If a grown-up needs to rush to work in the morning, you can ask your kid to give you “fast sprinkles!” to make sure you catch your bus or train, or grownups can sprinkle their little ones when they need reassurance (“confidence sprinkles” before trying something new).

And when you need a lift yourself - pause, close your eyes, and imagine gently sprinkling your own shoulders with what you need most today. It’s a playful reminder to meet life’s harder moments with imagination, kindness, and lightness.

NB: This isn't a replacement for the important practices of listening and empathy; always use your judgement as to when turning to play might be appropriate or not for the moment.

Prep

  • Identify a moment when someone could use a confidence or motivation boost. On top of giving them the support they need, see if it's an appropriate moment to also add a touch of lightness and play.

Play

  • Step 1:

Come close to the person you'd like to give a boost.

  • Step 2:

Circle them and pretend to enthusiastically shower them with invisible sprinkles while repeatedly chanting "Motivation sprinkles!", "Fast sprinkles!" or "Confidence sprinkles!"

  • Step 3:

End with a cheer, hug, or a big deep breath together.

  • Step 4:

Bonus - create new sprinkle types as needed throughout your week!

Extend

  • Sprinkle Affirmations: Pair sprinkles with affirmations (“I can try again,” “I am brave,” “We’ve got this”).

  • Sprinkle Yourself: Take a mindful moment alone to sprinkle yourself before a task or to reset your energy.

  • Wind-down Ritual: End your day by sprinkling one another with “rest sprinkles” before bed.
