This puzzle hunt idea is a great way to breathe new life into familiar puzzles by adding a sensory twist. Hide the puzzle pieces in a sensory tray filled with materials like rice, sand, or shredded paper, and have your child search for the pieces to complete their puzzle. If they’re developmentally ready, adding tongs makes it a fantastic fine motor exercise, supporting hand strength and coordination.
This activity adds an element of excitement and curiosity to regular puzzle play while engaging the senses and developing problem-solving skills. It’s ideal for toddlers and preschoolers who enjoy a hands-on approach to learning!
Set up a sensory tray using rice, sand, shredded paper, or any sensory base you have available.
Hide the puzzle pieces throughout the sensory tray, making sure some are visible to start.
Place tongs or tweezers nearby if your child is ready to use them.
Invite your child to search for the hidden puzzle pieces in the sensory tray.
Encourage them to use their hands or tongs to pick up the pieces they find.
Once all pieces are found, have them complete the puzzle, or hide them again for another round!
Sorting Challenge: Hide multiple puzzle sets in the sensory tray and ask your child to sort the pieces by matching them to the correct puzzles.
Obstacle Course: Place the sensory tray at one end of the room and have your child carry each found puzzle piece across a simple obstacle course (like stepping over cushions) to complete the puzzle on the other side.
Timed Hunt: Introduce a timer and challenge your child to find all the pieces within a certain time, adding an extra element of excitement.
