This timeless game never gets old! The challenge? When someone shouts “The floor is lava!” you have to quickly jump onto nearby objects to stay safe, because the ground is now imaginary lava!
Use cushions, mats, towels, or even designated safe zones as stepping stones. It’s a great way to burn energy, practice balance, and bring out some joyful silliness.
Perfect for rainy days, playdates, or anytime you need a playful movement break.
Place safe stepping items around the room
Make sure the area is clear of hazards and supervise closely
Spread cushions, mats, or towels around the space.
Start walking or dancing around the room.
At any time, someone yells “The floor is lava!” and everyone must quickly get off the floor onto a safe spot.
Mix it up by moving the safe spots between rounds or adding a countdown.
Lava shoes: This one is more of a hack for grown-ups who might not have the energy to run away from the lava but want to stay playful. SImply declare you have "lava-proof shoes or socks on" and carry on as usual.
Freeze dance alternative: Play music and do a take on the "freeze dance", but instead of freezing when the music stops, shout out "the floor is lava" and run to a safe space instead
Colour-coded islands: Assign each cushion or mat a colour and call out which colour is safe before the lava hits.
Rescue mission: Scatter toys around the room. Players need to “rescue” them one at a time without falling in the lava.
