Weave a simple & unique story together, taking turns to build a line or two at a time.
One person might begin with “Once there was a cat who wanted to fly…” and the next adds “…so he built wings out of leaves and string!” Before long, you’ve got a wild and wonderful tale that nobody could have predicted.
It’s a simple way to encourage storytelling, vocabulary, and cooperative play. Plus, kids love the unpredictability - will the princess meet a dinosaur? Will the robot learn to bake cookies? You never know what’s coming next.
This game works brilliantly at home, on the go, or at bedtime. It’s low-prep, and can lead to lots of giggles for all ages!
None! But you can optionally decide on a theme or word/s to build your story around beforehand.
One person starts with a simple opening line.
Take turns adding one or two lines to continue the story.
Keep going until the story comes to a natural or funny ending!
Word challenge: Add the rule that the story must include a word or multiple words (like "marshmallow" or "octopus") - the sillier the better!
Silly voices: Get into character or tell the story using funny voices
Picture book: Staple paper together and turn your story into a homemade picture book later!
Turn-taking word: Pick a word to indicate the end of your turn - e.g. "jellybaby!"
Story chain: Make it a memory game and repeat the story from the start at every turn!
Make it rhyme: Pick a word and make every turn end with a line that rhymes with it!
