Turn a handful of colourful cereal into a playful jewellery-making snack-tivity!

Thread ring-shaped cereal like Cheerios or Froot Loops onto string (or another suitable threading material) to create necklaces, bracelets, crowns, or whatever wearable creations you can imagine.

The repetitive threading is wonderfully satisfying and gives little hands a chance to practise fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, and concentration. And because the "beads" are edible, there’s an extra bit of excitement when you’re finished!

It’s also a brilliant party activity for all ages - where guests can make their own (very temporary) party accessories!

It’s inexpensive, easy to set up, and doubles as a little snack once the jewellery-making is done.

Safety Notice: Small parts can be a choking hazard. Please supervise closely.

Materials

Prep

  • Step 1:

Gather your cereal and threading material.

  • Step 2:

Cut lengths of string for necklaces or bracelets.

  • Step 3:

Secure one end with a small piece of tape or tie a large knot so the cereal doesn't slide off. You can also tie one piece of cereal to the end to act like a stopper.

  • Step 4:

Set out the cereal in bowls, ready for creating.

Play

  • Step 1:

Thread the cereal onto the string, one piece at a time.

  • Step 2:

Experiment with different colour patterns and combinations.

  • Step 3:

When finished, tie the ends together to make a necklace or bracelet.

  • Step 4:

Wear your creations, admire them, then enjoy your edible jewellery!

Extend

  • Rainbow Jewellery: Thread the colours in rainbow order.

  • Colour Sort: Sort the cereal into colours before you start.

  • Longest Necklace: Work together to make the longest cereal necklace you can.

  • Friendship Bracelets: Make a bracelet for someone else and choose colours you think they'll love.

  • Count & Create: Count how many cereal pieces you used or compare the lengths of different necklaces.
