This super simple activity is all about rhythm, connection and a light reset.
Whether you’re stuck in traffic, waiting at the table, or hanging out at home, tapping out a beat gives you and / or your little ones a fun, screen-free and zero prep way to fill the time.
Start with a basic pattern like clap–clap–tap, or pat your knees then the table. If you're waiting at the train station, you could just drum your fingers on your lap.
If your kids are with you, see if they can repeat it. Then...
Tap out a simple rhythm using your fingers, hands, or feet. You could use your lap or a hard surface. Challenge yourself to build upon the rhythm or add music or singing to tap along to.
If you're with kids, invite them to copy you and take turns creating your own rhythms.
Add variations - go faster, slower, louder, quieter.
Challenge each other with longer or sillier patterns.
Movement Beat: Dance around then dd claps, stomps, or jumps into your rhythm.
Name Beats: Say each other’s names to a beat and make it into a little chant.
Drum Hunt: Find safe household items that make different sounds and try each one.
