Yoga Story combines storytelling with movement, making it a playful and engaging way to build flexibility, focus, and mindfulness.
As you tell a simple story, pause to strike different yoga poses that represent the characters or actions. You can create your own story or use familiar tales, guiding your child (or even your partner!) through poses that make them feel like part of the adventure. You could also use yoga cards (or draw your own) and pick them at random to build a story.
It’s a...
Decide on the story or adventure you want to tell (e.g., an animal-themed story, a forest walk, or a journey to space). Or set out your cards if using them to build the story.
Begin by setting the scene of your story (e.g., "We are about to go on an adventure through the jungle").
As you tell the story, pause to do poses that fit the narrative. For example, pretend to reach up high like a tree (Mountain Pose), crawl like a lion (Cat Pose), or stretch your arms wide like an eagle (Warrior Pose).
If using cards, pick one at random then let it prompt you for the next part of the story.
Invite your child (or partner) to join in and make the poses together.
Create Your Own Story: Let your child help come up with the storyline and choose the yoga poses.
Relaxing Ending: Finish the story with a relaxing pose like Child’s Pose or a short meditation.
Yoga Card Memory: Once you finish the story, turn the yoga cards into a memory game by flipping them over and seeing if you can retell each part of the story before looking.
Breathing Exercises: Throughout the story, integrate breathing exercises that correspond with the action. For example, you might breathe deeply to calm down after a dramatic chase scene, or practice slow breathing to imagine walking through a calm forest.
